Chapter 17
Eva
âWhat the hell was that?â Caitlin asked me as soon as Sean had closed the door.
I collapsed on the couch and put my hands over my face. I felt more than saw Caitlin drop down next to me. She didnât speak and I didnât open my eyes to look at her, but I could easily imagine the look she had on her face.
âCan we just pretend that didnât happen?â I asked after a few minutes.
âRight after pigs fly. Are you kidding me? Do you honestly think that I, or even Sean, is going to pretend like that didnât happen? What was that?â she asked.
âWhat did it look like. We kissed,â I said.
I sat up and put my elbows on my knees and put my face in my hands.
âHow did that happen?â she asked.
âWell, when two people stand really close to each other and they want to kiss each other, they do,â I said.
âYou wanted to kiss him. Interesting.â
âOf course, I wanted to kiss him. He wouldnât have forced himself on me.â
âHow did said kissing happen? Or what happened beforehand to make you want to kiss him? Last time we talked, you werenât even sure if you wanted to be in the same room with him, but when I walked in there was hardly any room between you two. What changed?â
âNothing and everything,â I said.
âThanks for clearing that up,â she said.
âHe said he didnât mean to break up with me when he did.â
âWhat does that even mean?â she asked and turned to look at me better.
âHe didnât do it because he didnât want to be with me, or that he didnât care about me. He did it because he didnât want me to worry about him or wait for him while he was a SEAL.â
âBreaking up with him didnât make you stop worrying about him, he had to know that. You still cared about him, even if he gave you the impression that he didnât. That is interesting. I always thought there was more to what he was saying. Do you believe him?â she asked.
âI want to. I just donât know if I should,â I said.
âSean is many things, but he isnât a liar and he has never lied to you,â she said.
âYeah. He told me he did it for my own good. That he didnât know if he was going to make it out and he didnât want to do that to me. That he thought he had explained that to me.â
âIt makes sense and is kind of sweet. He put your happiness above his own. That sounds more like the Sean that we know.â
âHow can you say that? He made the decision without talking to me about it.â
âI take it you two were talking about that before I came in?â Caitlin asked.
âHe started saying things about how he had always cared about me, that he still cares about me.â
âThatâs pretty evident,â she said.
âAnd then he was standing in front of me and saying all these things that I just started kissing him.
